Awards-season campaigns grow more targeted as studios rethink prestige spending
The latest playbook favors precision outreach over blanket campaigning across every category.
Updated May 22, 1:20 PM
Studios are narrowing awards strategies around clearer category priorities after several years of expensive campaigns with diluted impact. Publicists say the newer model is more selective by design.
Rather than fighting for universal coverage, teams are concentrating budget and talent visibility on the combinations of category, critic support, and narrative momentum that appear realistically winnable.
The change reflects pressure for spending discipline but also a growing sense that prestige campaigns are most effective when they feel coherent rather than omnipresent. Voters respond better to a defined case than an indiscriminate push.
Campaign operatives say digital clutter has made restraint more valuable. Fewer but sharper appearances, screenings, interviews, and advocacy moments can create more memorable signals than a larger but flatter effort.
The economics of prestige remain difficult to measure, but the operating logic is clearer than before: if a studio spends, it increasingly wants the spending to look strategic rather than ceremonial.
