UK Counterterrorism Police Take Over Investigation Into Killing of Former Politician Ann Widdecombe

British counterterrorism authorities have formally taken charge of the investigation into the death of former politician Ann Widdecombe, following new evidence that has led detectives to treat the case as a potential act of terrorism.

The development comes after a 28-year-old man, who had initially been arrested on suspicion of murder, was rearrested under terrorism legislation. Authorities said the new arrest relates to the alleged commission, preparation, or encouragement of terrorist acts as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Widdecombe’s death.

Earlier in the investigation, police stated there was no indication that the incident was linked to terrorism or political motives. However, officials now say fresh intelligence and evidence have significantly altered the direction of the inquiry.

Laurence Taylor, Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, confirmed that specialist officers are now leading the investigation.

He said investigators are actively pursuing several lines of inquiry to determine what motivated the attack and whether any wider threat or connections exist.

Widdecombe, 78, was discovered dead at her secluded countryside residence near the village of Haytor, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in southwest England. Police have not publicly disclosed the exact cause of death but confirmed that she suffered serious injuries.

Investigators believe the attack occurred around midday on Wednesday. Concerns were raised later that afternoon after Widdecombe failed to appear for a scheduled television interview, prompting efforts to locate her.

The suspect was arrested two days later in South Yorkshire, more than 320 kilometers (200 miles) from the scene of the incident. His identity has not been released because no formal charges have yet been filed.

The case has attracted widespread attention across the United Kingdom due to Widdecombe’s long and high-profile political career.

She represented the Conservative Party in the House of Commons from 1987 until 2010 and held several government positions, including serving as prisons minister during the administration of former Prime Minister John Major.

Following her parliamentary career, Widdecombe became a familiar face on British television, appearing on popular reality programmes including Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. She later entered European politics as a Member of the European Parliament representing the Brexit Party before the UK’s departure from the European Union.

In recent years, she remained active in public life through her involvement with Reform UK, frequently contributing to national debates on immigration, social policy, and other political issues.

Known for expressing firmly held conservative views on issues including abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, Widdecombe often generated public debate. Despite her outspoken political positions, many colleagues and friends have described her as warm, generous, and approachable in her personal life.

Counterterrorism officers have emphasized that the investigation remains active and that determining the motive behind the attack is now their highest priority.
